PED6502 - Professional Learning and Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Analyse how they have taken responsibility for their own professional learning and their continued development into employment;
Evaluate and synthesise their professional knowledge and understanding of theoretical frameworks at the end of training and how this will impact on their continued practice;
Justify the decisions made for personal professional and academic targets to improve their teaching and continued professional development;
Evaluate and measure the impact of their practice on pupil progress over time.

Content:

This module directly builds upon students' professional journeys through the programme from reflection in Level 5 to professional learning in Level 6 and aims to accelerate this through the acquisition of further knowledge and skills applicable to them as trainee teachers and essential in their first year as New Qualified Teachers (NQTs). The e:portfolio is a critical element of this and enables students to document their learning and professional experiences. By engaging at Level 6 students are required to engage in critical reflection in the praxis of both school and university contexts. They will critically examine their own practice and professional learning, synthesize a range of evidence sources from academic and professional literature and apply knowledge and skills in the compilation and presentation of their portfolios. This will be guided by professional staff in schools and university Progress tutors premised by the fact that collaborative development and review is a powerful tool for all teachers' professional development.

Students will reflect on their professional and academic progress by reviewing previous targets set in Level 5, including outcomes from all assessment. As they progress through semester 1 of Level 6 they will reflect upon the objectives of the different elements of the taught course with a particular focus on how these will inform their capacity to meet the expectations for the final assessed block of training.

With the support of their progress tutors, students will set increasingly challenging developmental targets that will reflect aspirations to achieve the highest outcomes at the end of training. Following the assessed block of training, students will evaluate their practice, and using the Passport to Induction they will evaluate and update targets for the NQT year.

Students will engage in a range of directed tasks that include weekly evaluations and the Passport to Induction. They will evaluate the impact of their practice and the use of data to measure pupil progress over the time of their assessed block. Progress tutors will support students in their reflective practice by reviewing targets and supporting students in seeking additional experiences following the assessed block. Tutors will also work with students in preparing for employment and the job application process, by reviewing personal statements, application forms and discussing possible interview questions.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will meet their learning Progress Tutor for 1:1 target setting and to share their training plans and Passport to Induction. They will meet in smallergroups to consider the links between the different objectives from the taught course, time management skills, progress towards targets set and their continued professional knowledge. They will have an opportunity to use tutorial time for discussion and guidance on the application process and preparation for interview.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: All directed tasks will be uploaded to an individual e:portfolio. These will include, a development profile, weekly evaluations, a detailed action plan and developmental targets with supporting evaluation of the impact of their practice on pupil progress. The e:portfolio will also include a summary of key targets to support progression and continued professional learning into the NQT year through the completion of the Passport to Induction.

This module is exempt from condonement of marginal failure as a pass is required in order to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of key concepts and ideas around professional practice and pedagogy that are essential in order to demonstrate preparedness for School Based Training and in line with the requirement to meet the Teachers' Standards.
