On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify how they have taken responsibility for their own professional learning by taking on board advice and feedback from tutors and mentors;
Critically examine and reflect on their developing professional knowledge and theoretical frameworks and how this will impact on their practice;
Explain how they have reflected on personal, professional and academic targets to improve their teaching through professional development.
This module builds upon the base of reflection established in Level 4. The module firstly examines in depth the range of professional learning theories that guide professional practice. It also requires students to consider themselves as independent adult learners in the workplace. Thirdly, students will critically reflect on their professional and academic progress by reviewing previous targets set and outcomes from all assessments. They critically reflect upon the objectives of the different elements of the taught course with a particular focus on deepening their professional knowledge.
With the support of their University Development Tutor, students will jointly set increasingly challenging developmental targets that will enable them to explain how their developing knowledge and experience will impact on their practice for the next assessed block of training.
Development Tutors will support how students are engaging in the taught course, managing their time effectively using guided independent study time and taking responsibility for their professional and academic development.
Students will engage in a range of directed tasks related to reflection on professional practice and experiences in school-based training.
At this level, support for reflection will also be provided by taught sessions exploring professional practices - the content of these will include:
- The assessment process, including use of data;
- analysing data to identify and plan for pupil progress;
- applications of formative and summative data;
- evaluation of school-based practices in this area;
- safeguarding, including promotion of fundamental British values;
- practices relating anti-bullying.
Students will meet their Development Tutor for 1:1 target setting and action planning. They will meet in small tutorial groups to consider the links between the different objectives from the taught course, time management skills, progress towards targets set and their developing professional knowledge. Lectures illustrating professional practices will form part of the provision for this module, providing context for students' reflections and actions and for the setting of directed tasks.
