PED5472 - Inclusion, Learning and Teaching

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of learners and the complexities of the education process.
2 Analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way.
3 Demonstrate the ability to use their knowledge and understanding to locate and justify a personal position in relation to the subject.

Content:

This module will consolidate and extend content included in level 4 in relation to teaching pupils with a variety of needs and inclusion and make links to other courses delivered at this level. Throughout the course students will be required to consider the education of pupils with SEN, EAL, G&T etc within the wider context of teaching all pupils effectively.

The course includes such areas as:
The roles and responsibilities of the class teacher and all professionals in working with pupils with additional needs.
- The role of the parents and carers and the importance of effective communication.
- Promoting participation of pupils in meeting their own needs
- The role of the special school within inclusive education
- Early identification of needs and methods of monitoring and assessing progress of pupils

In relation to each of the above areas, students will be required to be familiar with a range of research findings and Government initiatives and be prepared to critically evaluate their contents and the approaches used in carrying out the research.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Taught sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, including input from outside agencies where possible, Throughout the module links will be made to students own experience in school. Learning will also be supported by resources in study packs and the VLE. Students will be required to undertake directed tasks in preparation for sessions. Students will be expected to attend and engage in all off site visits.

Further details relating to assessment
The assignment requires students to engage with statutory curriculum and code of practice documents to evidence their understanding of the approaches to teaching children with SEND. As such, this replicates the experiences of practising teachers.

This module is exempt from condonement of marginal failure as a pass is required in order to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding of key concepts and ideas around professional practice and pedagogy that are essential in order to demonstrate preparedness for School Based Training and in line with the requirement to meet the Teacher's Standards.
