On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate curriculum and subject knowledge in the areas of the foundation subjects and recognise how national priorities influence practices in schools;
Identify barriers to learning in these subjects, including those experienced by pupils and those resulting from school structures and educational policy;
Model and organise effective provision for Physical Education, appropriate to the age group taught, planning for progression in skills;
Recognise the diversity of cultural contexts and use this knowledge to engage pupils in learning.
Within this module students will be provided with the opportunity to explore the foundation subjects to enable them to begin to develop the pedagogical skills and curriculum knowledge to teach Key Stage 2 subjects. These subjects are: Art, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education (PE) and Religious Education (RE).
The module will equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver high quality teaching of these subjects in the Primary context. Students will be introduced to the National Curriculum specific to each area together with other relevant documentation. They will gain an understanding of how to plan effectively for each subject and will begin to consider matters related to diversity and inclusion. Links will be made to other curricular areas where relevant.
Each session will include a variety of approaches to promote active learning, to reflect those utilised in the primary classroom. These will be undertaken as a whole group, small group, pair or individually. Learning will be supported by reading materials provided in study and core reading and via online learning. Assignments and tasks will be fully scaffolded throughout module delivery to support students in their learning.
Teaching methods will reflect those used in schools and will include taking an active part in physical tasks, specifically for PE. Use will be made of visual media, song and spoken tasks. Other teaching methods will include use of fieldwork, use of ICT (to include video, DVD, digital photography), visual and written sources, photo packs, artefacts, role play and visiting speakers.
Students are expected to attend all off-site sessions for field work.
