PED4292 - Development. Learning and Teaching

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a developing comprehension of how pupils learn within a later years primary education context;
Identify features of effective lessons and approaches to Teaching and Learning appropriate to stage of study;
Manage time effectively and accept responsibilities including negotiation of group assessments;
Discuss how approaches to teaching and learning can be dependent upon contextual factors which include the social and cultural characteristics of learners.

Content:

The module focuses on various aspects of children's learning. Students will be introduced to some key theories about learning and teaching of children.
Although the development of teaching for the later years (7-11) is often focussed on pedagogical approaches, this module provides students with the opportunity to focus on child development and in particular
Language and learning
Motivation and learning
Social and emotional aspects of learning
Cultural aspects of learning
Thinking skills and meta-cognition
Teaching and learning
Effective learning environments
In addition, it also provides opportunities for students to consider and reflect upon their own learning and professional development.

Content is informed and prioritised through liaison with school partners via partnership days, steering group meetings and training meetings.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Taught sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, incorporating integrative assessments, peer assessment activity and group tasks, including group assessment tasks. Learning will also be supported by resources in core reading packs and the VLE.

Further details relating to assessment
As part of the assignment component students will submit an initial 500 word statement which will be marked formatively before the final submission.
