JOU5052 - Radio and Podcast for Journalists

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the current radio marketplace;
Research, conduct, edit and cue a radio interview to meet the expectations of a given audience;
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the practices involved in producing a radio news bulletin;
Work effectively to produce a radio news bulletin and to critically evaluate the process.

Content:

This module provides an understanding of radio and its current context. It examines the different marketplaces / audiences relevant to radio and provides tuition in interview skills, writing for radio and the skills needs to compile, write and deliver a news bulletin.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is taught via a series of interactive workshops which use innovative and creative teaching methods in order to foster student engagement and develop practical skills. The focus is on student-centred practice, using a broad range of simulated and live news exercises which allow the cohort to use their practical skills in safe environment where they benefit from tutor feedback and mentoring on an ongoing basis.

Further details relating to assessment
Assignment 1: Podcast and report. This is a 5-minute contribution to a team podcast of 20 minutes. The choice of topic is determined by the team. The subject of the podcast must involve news/sports/themes, to highlight your journalistic skills.

Assignment 2: BCB News Bulletin: Each student must prepare, script, read and record a 3-minute radio bulletin (either news or sports) to BCB standards and requirements. The 400-word reflective report accompanying this bulletin should report on the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the bulletin and also explain both the choices made and the lessons learned.

002 News bulletin & reflective report; 3mins & 400 words; end of semester 1 50%
