COM5022 - Customer-Centric Design

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Carry out a substantive review of a key project and associated team operations;
Identify project blockers, the key actions to improve it and how it might be further developed to meet business requirements;
Understand the importance of personal brand and articulation of their own skills within a team;
Demonstrate understanding of customer requirements and user experience.

Content:

In this module students will review, reflect upon and develop the group project work completed for COM4044 Team Project. This will include testing / hacking the Level 4 team projects to assess strengths and weakness, in terms of:
- Software reviews: code reviews, pair programming, inspections, walk-throughs, and technical reviews
- Design reviews: identifying and managing project blockers.
- Personal brand and articulation: goal setting, innovation, networking, communication (both in-team and client-facing), and certification routes
- Reviewing requirements: business objectives, scopes, quality in requirements and testability. Students will identify lessons learned and supported in formulating more comprehensive and robust project plans for more efficient and effective. These plans will be applied in response to a given client brief which requires the design, development, and delivery of an appropriate software product. There is a focus on the ability to reflect the client's branding in the design of the software product and on the provision of inclusive and accessible customer experience.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The learning and teaching will focus on the nature of group work: the relation of individual skills and contributions to the overall group dynamic and its outcomes. It is essential that students understand that their own brand rests on success of every project in which they are involved as well as how they work within the team. To achieve this the groups constituted for this module will be different from those that produced the work in COM4044 Team Project.

Further details relating to assessment
Project Audit: this reviews project work from COM4044 Team Project, considering how could it have been done differently, how the work might have been speeded up, and how the product and operations might be improved. The structure of the audit follows the headings outlined in the content section (above).

Project brand review: a review of the individual role, brand, and skills within COM4044 Team Project, identifying opportunities for development and enhancement.

Project: The project is assessed through a hackathon:
1) Development and implementation of the software artefact;
2) A test;
3) A reflective evaluation of strengths and weaknesses in the design and workability of the software artefact.

Feedback will be provided on all 3 project elements, but there will be a single mark for the project.
