On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the nature of start-ups and business concept development.
Use their arguments through a coherent and evidenced business plan, including marketing, operation, finance and economics, and people and organisation sections, which follows academic and professional protocols.
Demonstrate the capability of working in teams, reflect and manage team dynamics.
This module requires students to develop a start-up business idea, and present it with the help of a business concept / plan, including sections on Market / Consumer, Finance / Economics, Operations Model and Organisation structure, thus integrating L4 studies of core business disciplines. In addition, this module introduces a systematic approach which develops all nine employability skills outlined in the programme specifications.
The multi-disciplinary teamwork will take students through a classic 'form, storm, norm, perform' dynamic when teams will be created at the very beginning of level 4 (Induction week-form). The teams will receive a range of tasks throughout level 4, the main ones being integrated into Semester 1 Management and Organisation Behaviour (storm), where it would be also closely linked to the theoretical content of the module. It would be followed by Semester 2 Operations Management (norm), and culminating during Programme Level Assessment Business Challenge (perform).
Preparation for presentations will include tutoring support: generic for the whole cohort / team and function specific (Marketing, Finance, Operations, HR) for relevant BA (Hons) programmes. Each student team / group will contain a mix of representatives of all 4 BMM BA programmes, representing 4 above mentioned functional areas. Following briefing / workshop sessions students will organise a series of team meetings to develop their Business Concept and prepare for the presentation.
