SHN6402 - Exercise for Special Populations

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise prescription.
Critically discuss the role of exercise/ physical activity for different clinical population groups.
Explain and evaluate appropriate adaptation/modification of exercise/ physical activity for different clinical population groups.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the marginalisation of specific groups, from physical activity, health promotion and service provision with specific reference to intercultural issues in professional practice.

Content:

Exercise, physical activity and health; fitness assessment issues related to special population groups; children and physical activity; females and exercise issues; exercise considerations for a sedentary population; exercise and the older adult; special exercise considerations and adaptations for special populations; risks and benefits of exercise for special populations; psychosocial issues and strategies for exercise/physical activity adherence.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The sessions will be organised in mainly 3-hour teaching blocks. Workshops will be used to develop student understanding of the clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise prescription and the role of exercise for these populations. The module will then develop students' understanding and ability to adapt/modify exercise or physical activity for clinical groups.
