SHN5332 - Coaching Pedagogy

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of theories of learning.
Demonstrate knowledge of individuals learning preferences and how these could influence coaching practice.
Demonstrate an understanding of the stages of learning and how this is reflected in coaching behaviours.
Demonstrate knowledge of behaviourist and cognitive theories of learning and how these relate within applied coaching.

Content:

The module serves to examine the complex multidimensional learning process and the application within sport coaching. This will specifically have a focus on youth development coaching by taking into consideration a review of the appropriate coaching interventions based on an individual's stage of learning. Furthermore, the learning preference of athletes will also be considered and implications for coaching strategies will be critically examined to examine individualising practices and being effective across differing coaching contexts.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Theoretical content is discussed in lectures before which students are presented with guided group study to consolidate the theory and prepare with peer and lecture support for the practical session. Students then work in a practical lesson to develop the understanding of the application.
