On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically review research evidence pertaining to exercise prescription.
Review evidence on contemporary lifestyle diseases in relation to exercise and fitness.
Design and evaluate personal training programmes for clients with different needs, with particular reference to individual/group and healthy/special populations.
Deliver and adapt a personal training programme for healthy and special populations.
Guidelines for exercise prescription. Epidemiology. Contemporary lifestyle diseases. Practical skills in personal training. Planning an effective personal training programme.
Learning and teaching methods will take the form of weekly 1.5-hour lectures and 2-hour practical fitness sessions. Assessment will be a gym portfolio and practical assessment. Through workshops, students will develop an understanding pertaining to exercise prescription as well as review evidence on lifestyle disease and exercise prescription. Later in the module, students will learn how to develop and design a personal training programme for health and special populations. Students will design and lead a personal training session in the practical assessment.
