Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of national curriculum aims and content in relation to secondary athletic and outdoor and adventurous activities.
Demonstrate ability to apply progressive learning to short term planning, showing understanding and application of learning objectives and outcomes, differentiation, teaching points and safety.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature of and influences on physical growth and the development of motor skills.
Appraise the contribution of athletic activities towards health-related exercise and lifelong participation in physical activity.

Content:

National Curriculum - aims and content, links to personal and social learning through Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA).

Planning and organisation in athletics and OAA structure, progression, risk assessment, differentiation, short term planning.
- Questioning to promote understanding
- Health related exercise
- Fitness testing
- Links to outside agencies
- Motor development - fundamental motor skills, coordination, balance, agility
- Self-evaluation and reflection

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching methods will include lectures, workshops and practical sessions. The integration of these three learning environments will facilitate dissemination of underpinning theory, group-based and student-led learning and also the application of this learning within a teaching (practical) environment. The practical environment in particular allows the students to develop their pedagogy in preparation for future employment.

Further details relating to assessment
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.

Formative assessment will take place mid-module.

LOs 1 & 2 are assessed in a group presentation of a learning activity designed for either Athletics or Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. LOs 3 & 4 are assessed by an essay on the topics of health related fitness and lifelong participation.
