MMD7172 - Leading Change

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
With critical awareness examine and assess the implications of managing in turbulence and uncertainty for leadership, and the approaches for assessment and decision-making
Make sound judgements and apply subject-specific knowledge into a range of change situations
Design and develop performance management approaches to drive successful implementation
With critical awareness develop individual preferences for specific styles of change management in order to increase flexibility in leading implementation
Evaluate critically and respond appropriately to factors in the organisation's external environment

Content:

A common response to uncertainty, crisis or the need for rapid change is to tighten control, narrow the focus and centralise leadership. This module seeks to provide a different perspective, emphasising the importance of developing, protecting and harnessing strategic capabilities. The module approaches implementation and strategy development as an integrated two-way process, where the form of organisation and its links with the environment are perceived as critical factors. Clearly, people are a central element in understanding implementation, adaptability and learning; the module places emphasis on the people aspects of change and of appropriate leadership.
- Examination of organisational change theory and key concepts
- Review and assessment of integrated frameworks for leading change
- Issues and challenges in leading change in the context of various types of organisational structures
- The role of leaders in affecting change, from potential to possible limitations

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module uses active learning workshops focussing on practical work-related issues. Students receive a learning package prior to the workshop to facilitate active participation. The management workshops give students practice in professional skills.

Further details relating to assessment
The assignment concerns the implementation of a strategic change project in an organisation. The assignment allows for the assessment of both the students' knowledge and their ability to synthesise and apply this knowledge in novel contexts. Their written communication skills are assessed as well as their ability to formulate logical and coherent arguments.
