MMD7001 - Global Business Environment

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Explain contemporary developments in the world economy and evaluate the implications
Apply theoretical framework to explain developments in the current macroeconomic international environment
Incorporate cultural issues into the analysis of a business problem
Identify the global opportunities of a given business scenario
Write focussed papers that draw on multiple sources to articulate complex ideas

Content:

This module examines the macro-economic and political forces that influence the development and functioning of the global business environment. Of particular interest are: the formation and development of international regimes, such as those governing multilateral trade; global economic governance; the development of international organisations and their role in regulating the global environment; strategies employed by businesses and not-for-profit organisations to influence the outcomes of intergovernmental agreements; trade and international labour standards; and alternatives to intergovernmental regulation, such as voluntary Codes of Conduct, Codes of Business Principles, and their efficacy. This module offers an in-depth understanding of the complex international environment in which organisations operate.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will be encouraged to develop a critical and reflective approach to the module content. Review of the theoretical concepts and models will be included in a distance learning type of workbook prepared for this module. However, additional directed reading and research will be expected. The material will then be developed through exercises, commentary and consideration of recent publications. Interactive, small group sessions will comprise a mix of teaching and working both individually and in-group.

The assignment allows for the assessment of both the students' knowledge and their ability to synthesise and apply this knowledge in novel contexts. Their written communication skills are assessed as well as their ability to formulate logical and coherent arguments.
