On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to speak confidently and with a reasonable degree of accuracy and appropriateness in terms of grammar, vocabulary and register.
Demonstrate the ability to extract the key points and relevant details from academic articles and complex written texts, recognising logical relationships such as comparison and contrast, problem/solution, cause and result.
Demonstrate the ability to understand the main points in an audio debate from the television or radio, both orally and in a written summary.
Write short essays incorporating source material related to an academic topic. Demonstrate the ability to develop an effective argument in response to an essay title.
Use oral communication skills to lead and participate in seminar discussions. Show understanding of grammatical features common in academic speaking and writing, e.g. verb forms and tenses and of appropriate academic style.
This English language unit provides the advanced stage in the development of all four skills, further developing students' English language proficiency in the context of academic study and subject speciality, including vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing, and further developing capacity to use these skills in short essays and group discussions. The unit will require students to use their linguistic skills in a variety of exercises and situations, to develop their confidence about using English in individual and group/team discussions and presentations.
The unit will be taught in a series of interactive seminars and workshops, providing a highly supportive environment through which students will develop their language and communication skills.
Formative assessments and feedback will be provided to students during seminar/workshop sessions throughout the unit on the basis of home/classroom tasks (individual and group). Formative assessments will help students to prepare for summative assessment at the end of the unit.
