FDA4032 - Inclusivity and Diversity

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
define and analyse inclusivity and diversity in relation to theory and practice;
point out the significance of legislation and culture for inclusive practices in today's society;
explore strategies for enhancing inclusive practices within their workplace;
model ICT to enhance their assignment.

Content:

This module will focus on:
- changes over time in models and labels associated with inclusivity and diversity;
- theories and definitions, language and terminology of inclusivity, diversity and disability;
- legislation designed to enhance inclusivity with particular reference to the Equality Act;
- issues of inclusivity and diversity as they pertain to societal groups e.g. disability, class, gender, ethnicity and the socially excluded;
- implications and choices related to inclusivity and diversity for children and their parents;
- evaluating the impact of inclusive practices in the education system, in society and in students' workplaces;
- issues and ethics involved in carrying out case study research.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning and teaching will include a range of methods such as lectures, seminars, e-working, workshops and tutorials, with emphasis on team experience and peer support, large and small group discussions, problem-solving activities and individual and paired working.

Students may be expected to draw on a range of theoretical/academic, personal and work-based resources. Course documentation, support materials and web-based materials will be available on the VLE as appropriate.

Study skills will be developed. During the course of each session there will be opportunities for tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives of the module.

Students will maintain their Personal Development Log during this module and on-going self-evaluation will be part of the students' identification of needs.

Further details relating to assessment
The assessed PowerPoint file or poster with accompanying notes is the outcome of a 5-minute presentation shared in student groups in the final session. The presentation is a course requirement enabling formative assessment.
The evaluation of policy and practice within the student's own organisation includes a personal definition of diversity and inclusivity.
Informal numerical marks will be recorded intra-departmentally for reference in cases of condonement and provided to the student as formative feedback.
