CYP5162 - Pedagogy, Practice, Assessment and Frameworks

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Appraise a range of perspectives on early childhood education and learning;
Discuss the effectiveness and impact of current curriculum guidance in Early Years settings;
Plan a series of learning experiences for young children, which include the specific areas of Literacy and Mathematics;
Demonstrate an ability to analyse appropriate observation and assessment of learning observed in placement settings.

Content:

This module will develop the students' understanding of the Early Years curriculum from birth to age 5. Students will be expected to research how effectively the curriculum has been applied in a range of early years' settings. Students will be expected to analyse critically an international range of perspectives and theories related to early years' education, e.g. Reggio Emilia, Scandinavian approaches, Steiner, Montessori, etc. Learning theory will be assessed as to appropriate use in early years' settings.
Students will develop previous study at Level 4 and further consider learning experiences in the context of the EYFS Areas of Learning and Development and the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place via lectures and in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions. Formative assessment opportunities will be incorporated throughout this module and will include peer assessment of planning and report. Self-assessment will be integrated to support learning and understanding.

The planning assessment for this module will involve a series of learning opportunities for children related to the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework. Further guidance will be offered within the Module Handbook and within taught sessions.
