SHN7045 - Healthy Ageing

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Appraise attitudes to ageing and policies and practices demonstrated in different societies and cultures with particular attention to diversity and disability
2 Demonstrate an understanding of the biology of ageing with particular reference to cardiovascular, brain and mobility impairments.
3 Critically examine factors affecting successful ageing eg. personality, roles and responsibilities, active leisure, nutrition, relationships and care.
4 Analyse research evaluating interventions which promote healthy ageing.

Content:

Global ageing: attitudes, policies and practices; an economic burden or an under-used resource?
The ageing body and mind: changes in structure and function. Factors affecting successful ageing. Interventions to promote the health and wellbeing of older people in a variety of settings.
