SHN6722 - Physical Activity and Behaviour Change

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) identify the role of the ‘health trainer’;
(2) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological and environmental factors affecting health behaviours;
(3) support individuals in learning how to make better health choices and support them in initiating and sustaining appropriate behaviour changes;
(4) facilitate small group active learning sessions;
(5) critically evaluate their developing competences as a health trainer;
(6) critique current interventions for active living.

Content:

The role, skills and competences of the health trainer;
behaviour change theories and models: a critique;
environmental change framework;
motivational interviewing: underpinning concepts, strategies and techniques;
exemplars of individual and community strategies for active living;
groupwork facilitation methods;
ethical considerations;
writing a self-reflective log and action planning.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Semester 1 will use lectures and seminars.
Semester 2 involves introductory workshops and independent student practical work with individuals and groups supported by tutorials. The work undertaken will be negotiated between the client(s) and the trainer, be subject to a contract and must be agreed by the tutor.
