Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Critically appraise the sports industry in the UK, key policy and strategy and the position of coaching within this industry.
Appraise the relationship between sports coaching and the wider context of sports development in the UK.
Evaluate the theories and concepts that help describe and explain the role of sports coaching within a modern society.
Discuss the historical development of sports coaching within the UK.
Critically appraise the social and cultural theories that influence the relationships between coaches and other professionals within the sports industry.
Evaluate and compare the structure and system of sports coaching in other countries outside of the UK.

Content:

The sports industry in the UK and the positon of coaching wtihin this industry. The key policy and strategic documents that apply to the development of coaching as a professionally regulated vocation. The relationship between sports coaching and the wider context of sports development in the UK. Theoretical and conceptual forms of analysis that can help to describe and explain the role of sports coaching within a modern society. The historical development of sports coaching within the UK. Theories that can be used to explain the cultural and social processes that influence the relationships between coaches and other professionals within the sports industry. Theories that examine the social status of sports coaches and coaching within a modern society. The strucutre and system of sports coaching within at least one other country aside from the UK.
