SHN6102 - Nutrition across the lifespan

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of biochemical and physiological characteristics of males and females in relation to nutritional requirements through the human life span.
Demonstrate an understanding and critically discuss factors relating to gender and age related nutritional disorders.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature and underlying psychopathology of eating disorders.

Content:

Nutrition through the lifespan from pre-conception through to old age. Nutritional and physiological factors relating to children’s, men’s and women’s health. Nutritional adaptation in growth, pregnancy, starvation/dietary restriction and exercise. Focus on diet and disease states such as calcium and bone health, breast and colon cancer, coronary heart disease, obesity and eating disorders. Nature and psychopathology of eating disorders. Subpopulations at risk of disordered eating behaviour.

Interactive lectures supported by workshops/seminars to solve case studies linked to the lecture topic.
