Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: Show an understanding of the motives for exercise participation and methods for encouraging adherence.
Critically review research evidence pertaining to exercise prescription.
Review evidence on contemporary lifestyle diseases in relation to exercise and fitness.
Plan and teach an appropriate fitness class and prepare a 10 week affiliated fitness programme.
Demonstrate a contemporary knowledge of health and safety issues and contra-indications in relation to exercise and fitness

Content:

Guidelines for exercise prescription. Principles of training. Epidemiology. Contemporary lifestyle diseases. Motivation for exercise and adherence. Health and Fitness screening. Practical skills in teaching fitness to the community. Planning an effective fitness programme. Health and Fitness instructors and the community.
