SHN5142 - Research Methods 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Select and justify a realistic research topic relative to their degree programme.
Conduct a critical review of academic literature.
Construct a logical and workable research proposal including appropriate methods of data collection and analysis.
Demonstrate an understanding of qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts of research design and analysis.

Content:

Philosophical approaches to research/epistemology; Research designs; Developing research ideas; Working with a supervisor; Sampling and recruitment; Data collection techniques; Conducting a research study; Quantitative analysis (inferential statistics); Qualitative analysis (coding and content analysis, developing themes); Ethical considerations in research design; Constructing a research proposal.

Weekly two hour lectures are supported with a one hour workshop and a one hour tutorial
