SHN4422 - Coaching Process and Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and practice in the types of coaching methods, coaching models and strategies.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the types of communication used throughout the sports coaching process.
Identify the methods of planning, periodization and setting objectives for the delivery of coaching sessions.
Understand the purpose and function of evaluation, reflection and self-analysis within sports coaching.
Critically appraise the application of theories of learning and learning styles to sports coaching and sports performance.
Understand the role of sports coaching and the role of the sports coach

Content:

• Models of the sports coaching process and conceptual frameworks that define the role of sports coaches and coaching.
• Ethical considerations and moral responsibility: the coach-athlete relationship; inclusive and equitable practice; diverse populations, Sports Coach UK code of sports ethics.
• Specific legislation and statutory responsibilities that relate to specific populations such as children and young adults.
• Types of coaching methods and strategies and their application to sports coaching.
• The type of communication used through the sports coaching process:
Methods of planning, periodisation, setting objectives, evaluation/reflection and self-analysis for the delivery of coaching sessions.
• Theories of learning and learning styles to sports coaching and sports performance
