SHL6342 - Sport in Society

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) question and evaluate a number of issues in contemporary sport from a variety of approaches
(2) assess the current status of groups and individuals involved in sport and how they are influenced by agents and agencies
(3) demonstrate a sound knowledge of the relevance of selected perspectives which serve to explain the phenomenon of sport in society
(4) explore how theories can be used to deepen an understanding of sport and its relationship with other spheres of life
(5) use sociological method to evaluate issues related to sport in society.

Content:

Exploring current issues in sport (eg drugs/cheating; random/hooliganism; social inclusion, gender and ethnicity). Using sociological theories (eg Functionalist, Gender, Feminist, Marxist, Postmodern theories) as tools to assist in understanding the role players, and impact of, sport in today’s society.
