SHL4442 - Sports History

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of key debates surrounding the social and cultural development of sport.
Understand the importance of sports history and how the past informs contemporary sport.
Understand how to ‘read sports history’ with use of primary and secondary resources.
Demonstrate the skills required for undertaking a small research activity.

Content:

Whilst delivered over one semester, the module contains two clear streams aimed at introducing students the key topics in British sport history and also the key competencies in carrying out historical research in sport. Stream One introduces students to some of the main themes and issues within the history of modern British sport (such as amateurism and the rational recreation movement). Students will develop an appreciation of the importance of understanding sports history and how this informs contemporary sport.
Stream Two allows students to develop an awareness of the resources available to them in the study of the history of sport. Typically, focus will be given to primary and secondary resources.
