SEDM2032 - Leadership, Management & Collaborative Working

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Develop a critical understanding of leadership and management in order to select and apply appropriate techniques for collaborative working, consultation, change management and communications and so enhance their working practice
2 Have a critical understand of the nature of individual and group dynamics and how these influence working practices
3 Contribute to the development of leadership and management strategies within their work setting and understand how these are influenced by external agencies
4 Contribute to the development of the school’s inter-agency collaborative practices, policies and processes
5 Critically review how the learning on this module has impacted on their practice, developmental needs and targets

Content:

The module will involve participants engaging with:
• theoretical frameworks of leadership and management, particularly those involved with groups and team dynamics and change management.
• Leadership and management structures in schools at senior and departmental/subject/phase levels and their integration with schools policies, procedures, processes and inspection.
• Strategic, tactical and operational planning in the school and how these relate to the wider Children and Young Peoples Service provider contexts.
• Leadership and management skills such as collaborative working, consultation and communications.
• Key issues in current and emerging legislative, policy and other initiative frameworks such as Every Child Matters, Workforce Reform and the Common Assessment Framework.
• Other professionals across multi-disciplinary and multi-agency boundaries

Learning and Teaching Information:

Spring Year 2

The module will be delivered in a range of ways including; workshops, tutorials – face to face and/or on-line, tutor led input, coaching from school-based colleagues, flexible learning materials, electronic support including VLE-based materials, email and computer conferencing.

These options will be offered in various combinations as appropriate to participants’ circumstances and preferences as well as the availability of resources. Support will be particularly focused upon: developing learning outcomes; encouraging reflection; facilitating access to resource material to support learning; identify opportunities to apply theoretical material and learning to meaningful contexts in the workplace, helping to identify sources of and evidence of learning; advising on the structure for presenting a study or portfolio; relating learning to a wider context.
