SEDM2003 - Relecting on Professional Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Draw on and critique a knowledge base related to their professional practice
2 Understand and critically evaluate the professional standards for teachers
3 Extend their knowledge and understanding of current issues in classroom practice and applied relevant knowledge and research to the development of teaching and learning
4 Critically interpret evidence gathered from an appropriate range of sources including reflection, assessment and evaluation of their own practice, in relation to the professional standards for teachers
5 Identify their personalised learning needs and how they can be met in their own professional context

Content:

The content of the module will be primarily focused on the appropriate teacher standards as defined by the DCSF and how these have been maintained and achieved by the participant.

This includes:
• The collection and collation of data, from a number of sources, evidencing the achievement of the standards in relation to professional values and practice, knowledge and understanding and teaching
• Professional knowledge gained from a variety of sources and how the participants engagement with this impacts on the development of the their professional identify as a teacher
• Critical reflection on the data with respect to the student’s professional development and impact on the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom.
• Drawing out from the evidence base and other examples of professional knowledge how the participant’s understanding of particular professional issue(s) has deepened, arising from their experience in the classroom and the wider school. This could be drawn from any of the professional standards and would be advised upon by the participant’s school-based coach
• Identifying a specific area of focus which can inform the action research activity for module 2 – Developing Professional Enquiry Skills
• A consideration of how the learning from the module has resulted in the identification of further professional development needs and planning of how these might be met
• How these professional development needs will inform and guide the participants engagement with subsequent modules within the programme and other potential professional development opportunities

Learning and Teaching Information:

Summer/Autumn Year 1

The module will be delivered in a range of ways including; workshops, face to face tutorials, tutor-led input, coaching from school-based colleagues, flexible learning materials, electronic support, including VLE-based materials, e-mail and computer conferencing.

These options will be offered in various combinations as appropriate to participants’ circumstances and preferences as well as the availability of resources. Support will be particularly focused upon: developing learning outcomes; encouraging reflection; facilitating access to resource material to support learning; helping to identify sources of and evidence of learning; advising on the structure for presenting a study or portfolio; relating learning to a wider context.
