Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate the current agenda and policies relating to Assessment for Learning agenda and the resulting impact on school- and classroom-level practice.
2. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of formative assessment and its relation to “assessment for learning”.
3. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the theory and research relating to classroom discourse (both teacher-learner and learner-learner) and its contribution to reflective learning.
4. Select and apply relevant theory and research to develop and evaluate the impact of Assessment for Learning practice on pupils’ learning within a school context.
5. Provide evidence of meeting relevant National Standards for an Excellent Teacher.

Content:

Students will learn about recent and current policy relating to Assessment for Learning. By reviewing this national and regional policy in light of recent and relevant research, students will be able to evaluate practice in their own work context.
Students will learn the principles of formative assessment and its relation to Assessment for Learning. Students will have the opportunity to analyse teacher-pupil and pupil-pupil interactions and will make use of relevant research to critically review their understanding of this discourse with regards to improving pupils’ ability to reflect and direct their own learning.
Students will make use of this knowledge to design and/or evaluate Assessment for Learning activities.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of workshops, tutorials and seminars. Students will be expected to draw on their own working experiences, current legislation and local policy and practices as well as current research in order to contribute to, and lead, discussions.

Ongoing reflection on college-based sessions and relevance to the work context will be facilitated by the use of online forums on the college VLE.
