SEDM1023 - Behaviour Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate a systematic understanding of possible causes of emotional and behavioural difficulties amongst children.
2 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the approaches to managing challenging behaviour in the classroom.
3 Critically evaluate current national- and school-level responses to children with challenging behaviour.
4 Select and apply relevant theory and research to develop practice and evaluate impact on pupils’ behaviour and learning within a school context.
5 Provide evidence of meeting relevant National Standards for an Excellent Teacher.

Content:

Students will learn why children exhibit challenging behaviour and what teachers and schools can do to manage this behaviour. By reviewing recent research, students will be able to evaluate national-level initiatives and school-level responses to issues of challenging behaviour and non-attendance.

This module will also provide an overview of recent trends and research concerning classroom management, coaching and mentoring, so allowing students the opportunity to more effectively review their own practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of workshops, tutorials and seminars. Students will be expected to draw on their own working experiences, recent DCSF strategy documents as well as current research in order to contribute to, and lead, discussions.

Ongoing reflection on college-based sessions and relevance to the work context will be facilitated by the use of online forums on the college VLE.
