PSY5692 - Professional Development and Placement (Volunteering) in Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate the application of psychological concepts and theories within the volunteering sector.
2 demonstrate reflective evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses across a range of key employability skills within the volunteering sector.
3 apply employability skills and practical skills to the volunteering activity and perform to a satisfactory standard.
4 write an action plan for developing employability skills.

Content:

A professional development programme comprising:
1 – introduction to Professional Development Planning and Placements at Level 5;
2 – workshop sessions including:
• aspects of volunteering
• team work
• assessment centre tasks
• briefings on EPO procedures skills and preparation for attachment/assessment
3 – interview with Placement tutor.
Students must complete 60 hours of volunteering over an extended period (12-20 weeks).
Reflection and evaluation of the volunteering activity.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Tutor-led discussion amongst progress tutees.
Day conference and workshop sessions: presentations, briefings, discussions, practical activities (role play, drafting, writing) relating to the requirements of the preparatory portfolio and report.
Insight into the volunteering sector including funding, practical skills and ethos.
Individual tutorials with Placement Tutor / Progress Tutor before placement starts.

Additional assessment information
Students must pass both pre-placement portfolio and volunteering elements. In addition students must adhere to the College’s Professional Conduct Code.

003 Report 1 x 3000 words (sem 2) 70%
