PPD6002 - Supporting Learning & Inclusion

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate critical understanding by an appraisal of a range of theoretical perspectives of how children and young people develop and learn in light of their own experiences and own learning style.
Evaluate the impact of environmental, social, physical issues on an individual’s learning and cognitive development.
Discuss how key conditions may manifest themselves and how to respond appropriately in the learning environment following policy, legislation and guidance.
Reflect critically on their own practice, demonstrating an understanding of ethical issues, the limits of their knowledge and the consequent influence of their analysis.

Content:

This taught module examines learning theory, the development of cognitive abilities, inhibitors to learning and the impact of teaching strategies and institutions on individual learning needs.

The learning contexts considered will span the Foundation Stage to Key Stage 4 and through to further or higher education. Students will critically examine issues related to inclusion in light of legislation, the Code of Practice and other relevant strategies. International approaches to inclusion will also be explored.

Students will examine their own role in supporting the learning of those with whom they work: how they assess initial needs, strategies they use to support learners and how to measure success.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions. Formative feedback will be given during tutorial discussions and e-contact relating to drafts and plans on work in progress. Peer review will also be incorporated into sessions.
