PED7003 - Critical Thinking in Primary Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
Demonstrate a critical engagement with research into primary education
Critically evaluate key themes in primary education
Form a personal perspective on key elements of primary education policy, research and practice
Develop an area of personal interest in primary education
Demonstrate an understanding of a range of research traditions and their application to the primary classroom

Content:

In this module students will typically:
• Read and discuss a range of research in education from a range of research traditions including qualitative, quantitative, action research, ethnographical, etc
• Identify strengths and weaknesses in the traditions chosen
• Critically evaluate case studies; research reports; statistics, etc. and the use to which they are put
• Debate issues of current interest in primary education
• Gain a good understanding of action research and its application to the classroom
• Develop an area of personal interest and begin to consider how to engage in research of their own practice in this area
