On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 identify priorities for their early professional development in the context of induction (Q7b)
2 reflect on their own value systems, development and practices (R1)
3 demonstrate a creative and constructively critical approach towards innovation, being prepared to adapt their practice where benefits and improvements are identified (Q8)
4 accommodate to new principles and new learning
5 improve their own learning and performance, including the development of study and research skills, information retrieval, and a capacity to plan and manage learning, and to reflect on their own learning (T5)
6 demonstrate awareness of the roles of school colleagues with responsibilities, including those with responsibility for learners with special educational needs and disabilities and other individual learning needs (Q20)
7 demonstrate knowledge of how to identify and support children whose progress, development or well-being is affected by changes or difficulties in their personal circumstances, and when to refer them to colleagues for specialist support (Q21b)

Content:

Students will create a proposal for a small-scale school-based research project. They will be supported in both the content of the some taught sessions in the module and by more specific guidance from supervising tutors:
• selecting a focus for investigation that meets two criteria: first it should relate to assessment for formative purposes; second, it should align with an aspect of school-based curriculum or staff development
• formulating a question
• establishing what will count as evidence in answer to that question
• plan how to gather appropriate data
• establishing an analytical framework which will guide data analysis
