Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate secure knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach (Q14) (K1)
2 know how to use skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT to support their teaching and wider professional activities (Q17) (T2)
3 analyse complex situations concerning human learning and development in particular contexts, including their own learning (K1) (A1)
4 including some of the key paradigms and their impact on educational practices (K1)
5 recognise the processes of learning, explore pedagogical approaches and their impact on teaching and learning (K1)
6 analyse learning theories and classroom practise and their impact on children’s learning and development (A1)
7 reflect upon and evaluate concepts and theories of current classroom practise (R2)

Content:

This English component of this module has several strands:
• Focus on reading comprehension and writing composition within structured units of work whose content is related to subjects/areas of the curriculum other than English. Emphasis is placed on speaking and listening with the inclusion of visual and multi-media resources
• Emphasis on the writing process and becoming a writer is addressed. Issues concerning writing attainments related to gender differences will be investigated. The attainment of children with English as an additional language is also revisited. Research projects promoting children’s writing attainments will be analysed and evaluated
• Poetry including poems with predictable and repetitive patterns from a range of cultures and common themes is the focus of units of work
• Focus on the key features of non-narrative texts: grammatical and structural features
• Trainees are required to design and compose a multi-media information text
• Models of planning, teaching and assessment for formative purposes

The mathematical component of this module aims to enable trainees:
• To acquire knowledge and understanding of handling data in the FS and KS1 curriculum: sort familiar objects, present results using pictures, drawings or numerals (FS), solve a given problem by collecting, sorting and organizing information in simple ways including lists, tables, block graphs and pictograms (KS1)
• To understand the relationship between problem solving, using and applying mathematics and thinking skills
• To know the skills and processes involved in solving problems
• To know the role of the teacher in developing children’s problem solving skills, including the use of different teaching strategies
• To know how to plan and resource a challenging environment in which children can use and apply mathematical skills and knowledge
• To know how to extend and develop children’s mathematical language
