PED6292 - English, Maths and Science

Objectives:

On successful completion of the phase, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process
2. Analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way
3. Use their knowledge and understanding critically to locate and justify a personal position in relation to the subject
4. organise and articulate opinions and arguments in speech and writing using relevant vocabulary

Content:

Typically 50 to 100 words.
This module consolidates students’ subject knowledge and understanding related to English (with particular emphasis on children’s development as readers), mathematics and science.
Subject knowledge and understanding will underpin students’ capacity to plan and teach extended units of work, embedding assessments for formative purposes as per relevant national frameworks and structures.
This module requires students to apply their subject knowledge and practical experience (pedagogical content knowledge) related to the curriculum subjects English, mathematics and science. The module assignment invites students to critically evaluate aspects of those subjects as they relate to key themes of, for example:
• the primary curriculum and national frameworks
• curriculum development
• teacher knowledge
• subject leadership
• thinking skills
• direct instruction, memory, practice and “associative” learning
• social constructivism and “assisted” learning towards self-regulation
• motivation and learning
• language and learning
• collaborative learning
etc.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Taught sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, incorporating integrative assessments. Learning will also be supported by resources in CLARCS packs and the VLE.

Further details relating to assessment
No marks will be awarded for the assignment proposal: it will be formatively assessed. Students are required to achieve a pass in their assignment proposal as a condition for submission of the final synoptic assignment.
