PED6251 - English and Linguistic Diversity

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.
2. Analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way.
3. Organise and articulate opinions and arguments in speech and writing using relevant specialist vocabulary.

Content:

The module has several strands:
It focuses on the writing process and becoming a writer. Children’s progress as writers will be assessed and there will be with an investigation into gender differences in writing attainments. Research and development projects which seek to promote children’s writing attainments will be analysed and evaluated.

It revisits narrative composition with particular reference to children for whom English is an additional language. The main texts studied are traditional stories from a variety of cultures. Emphasis is placed on story-telling and drama strategies to meet the needs of literacy learners for whom English as an additional language.
Children’s narrative writing attainments are assessed and analysed. Models of planning, teaching and assessment for formative purposes are demonstrated in preparation for School-based Training.

This module will address the following 2012 Teacher Standards:
3. A teacher must demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge;
4. Plan and teach well structured lessons;
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils; and
6. Make accurate and productive use of assessment.
