PED6222 - Developing Children's Thinking within the Context of Mathematical and Scientific Understanding

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.
2 analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way.
3 organise and articulate opinions and arguments in speech and writing using relevant specialist vocabulary.

Content:

This module will consider children’s thinking within the context of mathematical and scientific understanding. The concept of problem solving as an approach to the learning and teaching of mathematics will be analysed, in particular the problem solving process, skills and the role of mathematical language. This will be complemented by the role of talk in the teaching of science and how it relates to theories of learning. The role of science in developing key skills and thinking skills and sustained shared thinking will also be examined.
This module will address the following Qualified Teacher standards for 2012:
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge; and
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis.
