PED6212 - Evaluating Educational Themes

Objectives:

On successful completion of the phase, students will be able to:

1 Understand:
- the underlying values and principles relevant to education studies and develop a personal stance which draws on their knowledge and understanding
- the diversity of learners and the complexities of the education process

2 Demonstrate the ability to:
- analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way

3 Demonstrate:
- the ability to reflect on their own and others' value systems
- the ability to use their knowledge and understanding critically to locate and justify a personal position in relation to the subject

4 Organise and articulate opinions and arguments in speech and writing using relevant specialist vocabulary.
Use numerical data to analyse trends and statistical data

Content:

The focus of this module is to draw together aspects of teaching and learning using government reports, inspection evidence and classroom research to inform the debate about effective learning and teaching. The module provides opportunities for students to appreciate the problematic nature of educational theory, policy and practice, encourages the interrogation of education processes and develops in students the ability to construct and sustain a reasoned argument.
Themes include:
• Critique of relevant policy, legislation and practice
• Issues related to underachievement in key groups
• Developments in teaching strategies eg. Creativity and motivation in the early years
• Issues related to media presentations of education issues
• Key issues in diversity and inclusion
This module addresses the following 2012 Teaching Standards:
1. Set high expectations that inspire, motivate and challenge pupils;
8. Fulfill wider professional responsibilities

Learning and Teaching Information:

Sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, predominantly workshop and group activity, including directed tasks addressing a range of communicative and analytical skills. Learning will also be supported by resources in CLARCS packs, handouts, web references and Moodle.
