PED5612 - Experiential Learning in the Early Years Curriculum

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.
Accommodate new principles and understandings.
Demonstrate the ability to reflect on their own and others' value systems.

Content:

This module will develop knowledge and understanding of how experiential learning theories can impact on children’s conceptual understanding. It will analyse the importance of real and relevant contexts for learning, particularly focusing on the curriculum areas of mathematics and science. Children’s enquiry based learning within the curriculum both indoor and outdoor will be evaluated and the role of the adult in promoting effective interactions and empowering children as learners. The importance of play within the Early years’ curriculum will also be addressed.
This module will address the following Qualified Teacher Status Standards for 2012:
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge; and
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis.
