PED5501 - Learning in an Alternative Context

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an understanding the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.
2 Analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way.
3 Demonstrate their knowledge and understanding to locate and justify a personal position in relation to the subject.

Content:

This module will introduce students to a variety of ways in which children’s learning is developed in a range of settings outside the mainstream classroom within the UK.
Students will be provided with opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding within a particular area of interest e.g. special school provision, museum education, outdoor learning. Following the completion of a short placement within a setting related to their area of focus they will be provided with opportunities to share their experiences and good practice with their cohort and other students.
Throughout the course links will be made between learning in the classroom and that undertaken in alternative settings reviewing areas of common practice and differences.
This module will address the following 2012 Teaching Standards:
1. set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils; and 2. Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Due to the nature of this course there will be a minimum of taught lead lectures within the university. Students will be expected to spend time researching their area of focus and spending time within their chosen setting. Small group tutorials will provide students with opportunities to prepare for and to reflect on common themes and experiences. Off-site visits will be undertaken. Students will be introduced to and expected to engage with a range of texts relevant to their chosen area and learning in alternative settings in general. With support from tutors they will prepare materials to share with their cohort and other students as a celebration of their placement and learning undertaken.

Other relevant information
Students will be required to find their own experiential placement and make all the necessary arrangements; however they will be required to submit details to the module tutors for authorisation. Students will be expected to attend and engage in all off-site visits.
