PED4261 - Early Years Mathematics

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Begin to demonstrate understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.

Content:

This module will enable trainees to acquire knowledge and understanding of the professional documentation associated with teaching in the Early Years.
It will examine the development of the concept of number: counting, place value, knowing and using number facts, calculating. Models of planning, assessment and organisation of learning in a Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 setting will be demonstrated in preparation for School-based Training.

This module will address the 2012 Teachers Standards relating to
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge and
4. Plan and teach well structured lessons.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis.
