PED4251 - Curriculum and Pedagogy in the Early Years Foundation Stage

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Begin to demonstrate an understanding of the underlying values and principles relevant to education studies and a developing personal stance which draws on their knowledge and understanding

Content:

The module has several strands.
It introduces early reading and systematic synthetic phonics: phonic knowledge and skills.
This includes reference to the ‘simple view of reading’ as a key theoretical perspective.
There is an emphasis on contexts for promoting language and reading comprehension in the early years including: shared reading; guided reading; individual reading.
The key features of simple narrative texts for beginning readers:
grammatical and structural features are identified.
Models of planning and assessment for formative purposes are demonstrated in preparation for School-based Training.

This module will address the following Teaching Standards for 2012 :
3. A teacher must demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge;
4. Plan and teach well structured lessons;
6. Make accurate and productive use of assessment.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching methods will include weekly lectures, practical workshops and tutorials.
A range of directed independent tasks will be set during the module.

Additional assessment information
The exam tests students’ knowledge and understanding of systematic synthetic phonics.
