PEA6012 - New Technologies in Primary Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Show they have developed a secure knowledge and understanding of new technologies and related pedagogy in order to support learning in the primary school.
Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of the use of technology in the curriculum and how this has developed.
Critically evaluate the use of new technologies in learning and teaching.
Demonstrate sound personal skills in the creation of activities for the primary classroom.

Content:

In this module students will consolidate their understanding of Health and Safety, Legal, Ethical and Data Protection issues in relation to new technologies.
• Use the curriculum guidance for the use of new technologies as appropriate to identify effective and appropriate aims and objectives for a group activity.
• Develop their use of appropriate technologies to support teaching and learning in the primary school in all areas of the Primary Curriculum.
• Show a critical understanding of national policies and guidance in the safe use of new technologies including effective e-safety.
• Show they can design opportunities for learners to develop technology skills.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Sessions will use a range of learning and teaching methods including peer tutoring, student presentations, tutor - led demonstrations, individual and paired working.
During the course of each session there will be tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives.
On-going self evaluation will be part of the students’ identification of needs.
Course documentation, support materials and web based materials will be available on the VLE.

001 Portfolio 1 x 2,000 word equivalent (End-of-Module - Yr 2 Term 3) 50%
002 Essay 1 x 2,000 words (End-of-Module - Yr 2 Term 3) 50%
