PEA5012 - Supporting Children in Literacy and Numeracy

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Plan for group activities based on the teacher’s planning in literacy and numeracy.
Demonstrate a sound understanding of the curriculum needs in literacy and numeracy including systematic synthetic phonics.
Critically evaluate planning related to the meeting of individual needs in literacy and numeracy development.

Content:

In this module students will gain a better understanding of the curriculum requirements for literacy and numeracy. They will explore language acquisition and systematic synthetic phonics as well as the effective teaching of early mathematics. Bearing in mind their role as support for children’s learning when in school, the students will learn about planning and how it can be adapted for individuals and groups. There will be practical elements to the module to develop the students’ own skills as well as critical examination of research in each field.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Sessions will use a range of learning and teaching methods including peer tutoring, student presentations, tutor - led demonstrations, individual and paired working.

During the course of each session there will be tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives.

On-going self evaluation will be part of the students’ identification of needs.

Course documentation, support materials and web based materials will be available on the VLE.

002 Planning and evaluation 1x2,000 words End-of-Module (Yr 1 term 3) 50%
