PEA4022 - Professional Development and Placement (Education)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of key support and teaching staff in a school.
Work to support a group of children within a teaching session.
Express an understanding of assessing how much a child / young person has learned in a teaching session against learning objectives.
Express an awareness of potential barriers to learning and their impact on individuals in their classes.

Content:

In this module students will undertake a sustained period of school-based placement. Within the placement they are to take on the role of support/teaching assistant, supporting groups of children/ young people under the guidance and instruction of the teacher. Students will be expected to gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of various staff members within the school and school policies. Students will be expected to get to know the children/ young people in their classes and how children/ young people differ in their learning approach, ability, background etc. so they can describe basic assessment and inclusion issues.

Learning and Teaching Information:

A short series of introductory lectures will introduce the support materials and assessment booklet. Students will be introduced to observation proforma and how to work effectively with an individual or small group of children/ young people.

Students are then in school 4 days a week for 7 weeks

Hours: 320 (8 hours a day x 4 days a week x 7 weeks)

Further details relating to assessment
Students will receive one visit from an academic member of staff to ensure entitlement and to support the class teacher in the assessment of the quality of their work.

001 Assessment Booklet End-of-module (Yr 1 Term 2) 20%
002 Portfolio of observations, reflective log, self evaluations, group plans 1 x 3,000 words (End-of-module) (Yr 1 Term 2) 80%
