On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate competence in understanding research principles and applying a range of research methods for data collection and analysis
2 Demonstrate a critical understanding of alternative approaches to research
3 Manage, conduct and disseminate research in a way that is consistent with objectivity and ethical guidelines
4 Demonstrate the acquisition of advanced knowledge and understanding of a particular aspect of theory and practice in the field of journalism
5 Demonstrate competences in the structuring and expressing of complex information and argument
Strategies and techniques of research design; the epistemological and ontological foundations of social research; methods of data collection and construction; ethnography, interviewing and questionnaires; social surveys; discourse and communications analysis; comparative and cross-cultural methodologies; evaluation research; quantitative and qualitative methods; the limits of research; ethical issues; political and other value issues in research; dissemination and use of research; establishing the research hypothesis or question. Conducting a literature review. Conducting a research project. Writing a dissertation.
The taught element is delivered in a 4 day block. Students are provided with a supervising tutor to support the independent study element.
