On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of how to make the most effective use of different filming locations;
demonstrate an understanding of how to investigate a filming location;
attain the practical skills to plan for a shoot on location;
demonstrate an understanding of how lighting is used in a variety of television genres;
develop the skills to critically evaluate the use of lighting in television;
attain the practical skills required to light studio or location environments;
develop an understanding of the health and safety aspects of using lighting in television environments.
During the module, students will build on their practical experience at Level 4 to look at all aspects of filming on location, from pre-production research and investigations or ‘recces’ to the actual filming. They will learn about the potential problems of location filming, ranging from dealing with the public to coping with thunderstorms. Industry speakers will be brought in to help students understand how to choose between location filming and filming in the studio, how to obtain the best results from camera and sound in a range of different environments and how to deal with some of the ethical issues that arise in television production. Students will also learn how to use equipment on location (including lighting) effectively and safely and how to make the most of the natural environment they are operating in.
In the second half of the module (after their placement period) students will focus specifically on how lighting and sound can be used in a variety of television environments to create a range of emotions and impact, including the very different uses of lighting in drama and entertainment shows. They will also learn how to use both natural and artificial light in different locations. They will acquire the skills to research and plan to light locations, as varied as one plus one studio interviews and an outside broadcast of a church service, and to understand the importance of achieving good sound quality in any production.
The module will be taught via lectures, interactive, practical workshops and sessions run by industry experts.
