MFC5122 - Myths, Meaning and Movies

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate critical understanding of the role of Occidental Mythology in contemporary popular film;
2. demonstrate critical understanding of the function of myth in film as a tool for understanding the world in which we live;
3. undertake independent research into the field and communicate their findings in written form.

Content:

The module provides a general introduction to the main themes of Occidental Mythology through the work of writers such as Rollo May, Joseph Campbell and Christopher Vogler. It examines how the themes of classical mythology are re-worked as contemporary themes in popular movies and plotted through the hero-quest structure.

The module explores the functions of myths as tools for understanding self, others and the world and the mythological and symbolic use of myths in film-story and craft. It addresses topics such as: myths and ethics; mythic narrative power; mythic power of film; the hero-quest; the journey to self; archetypes; symbolism; the grail quest.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The scheme assumes recruitment of 30.
Learning in semester 2 will take place through workshops designed to foster skills of independent study and research.
