MFC5042 - Script to Screen

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the process of screenwriting;
devise and produce a television programme utilising production and technical skills effectively;
demonstrate the ability to work productively as a member of a team;
reflect critically on their knowledge and understanding in a written format

Content:

The module contains two units.
Screenwriting: this unit explores dramatic structure and the concept of ‘story’ as applied to a selection of fiction and non-fiction programmes. Students are also introduced to the creative and technical dimensions of screenwriting and undertake a variety of practice exercises.
Programme Production: this unit builds on previous experience and introduces the practice of single camera programme production including briefs, treatments, storyboards and scripts; logistics of location recording; camera crew roles; single camera techniques; editing. This leads to a period of small-group production work, culminating in a presentation of completed artefacts to the whole group, followed by critical peer appraisal in preparation for the submission of reports.

Further details relating to assessment
Portfolio 1 will normally include a number of exercises on screen-writing designed to develop students’ skills in analysis, creativity and technical presentation. Portfolio 2 will normally include a short film produced to relevant specifications (group-produced).
The accompanying production portfolio will contain an individually produced critical appraisal of the film. The detailed requirements of the Portfolios will be published in the module handbook.
Students must complete and submit all forms of assessment to be eligible to pass the module. N.B. In extenuating circumstances and/or extreme difficulty, students may be offered an alternative, complementary, means of assessment.
Students permitted to take a half-module for the award of 10 credits will be assessed on the basis of the form of work relevant to the semester of study.
